Greek Orthodox Pyx - Hand Hammered and Etched Religious Fish and Cross Symbols and Lettering - Metal Art Container with Lid and Double Handles - Chalice - Ciborium

Based on the shape of this covered container, the etched letters and the symbols, I believe this vessel is a pyx, used in the Eucharist (communion) service in the Greek Orthodox church (similar to a chalice or a ciborium), It's really beautiful and rustic looking, hammered and etched by hand.

All around the lid and the lower part of the bowl are alternating fish and cross symbols. Each one is one slightly different since this was handcrafted. There is a row of designs above and below the fish and crosses. The handles are also decorated with a row of dots running downward. The top band of the bowl has some Greek words and more designs. The lid is a little more simple...fish and crosses only but the top has a finial with a cross-hatched design, again created by hand.

It is rustic looking because of both the hammered look and just the look of shops the metal which is uneven as far as smoothness and darkened areas. I checked the metal and it is not magnetic. If I had to guess, I'd say this is made of pewter but I'm not a metal expert. It's quite clean inside and out. I was not able to find anything that qualifies as a maker's mark. No labels. And I finally gave up trying to read the Greek letters. So, this will be both a mystery to solve and a really interesting container to display on a shelf or even to use.
