Embury shops Red Railroad Lanterns

These are a pair of original Embury Red Lanterns called the Number 40 Traffic Gard. They were most likely made in the 1940's in Warsaw, New York and are in outstanding condition. They have their original red color with just minor loss and some areas of wear. These lanterns are in good condition, with a great aged to look to them but are in a completely usable condition with no holes They have their original red glass globe with no chips or cracks.

They measure approximately 7 1/2" tall (Not including the handle) x 7 1/4" base.They have a single hanger which is 7 ¾” in length and are in very good condition. They are well marked--on the top is in thirds with info-Embury Manufacturing Co.-No. 40 Traffic Gard--Warsaw, New York, USA. The cap comes free, the knob turns and it opens to remove the globe. The tank appear to be intact, but cannot say for sure as have not tested. The lanterns are in as-found condition and have not been cleaned or restored. These are a great piece of history and stand out as something special.

The W.C. Embury Co. first introduced the dead-flame #40 Traffic Gard lantern in 1940 and marketed it specifically for use by highway contractors, utility companies, and municipalities to warn night time drivers of road hazards. This lantern model utilized a proprietary Fresnel (pronounced "Frah-Nell") globe not used on any other lantern model. The R.E. Dietz Co. bought Embury in 1953, and resumed production of the #40 Traffic Gard lantern under the Dietz name at least into the 1960's.
