Scorpion Alibrijes - Oaxacan Wood shops Carving

Oaxacan Wood Carvings (Alebrijes) are a magnificent expression of Mexican Folk Art. The talented carvers of Oaxaca create, entirely by hand, wonderful sculptures made from copal wood and their ingenious shapes with amazing patterns and colors have captivated collectors world wide.

Alebrijes (Spanish pronunciation: [aleˈβɾixes]) are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical (fantasy/mythical) creatures. The first alebrijes, along with use of the term, originated with Pedro Linares.

Most Alibrijes are signed on the bottom shops by the artist. This one is signed Maria Lopez, San Pedro Taviche, Ocotlan, Oaxaca. Please see photo.

The tail and stingers are removable (and will be sent to you separated as such - you just push them into position). The legs appear to have been glued in place. Please see photos.

This Pegasus is from my personal collection. I bought this piece in Nogales, Mexico in the 1990's.

Body is a mostly a dark orange/rust color with varying colorful designs painted in black, purple, blue, green and yellow.

Some minor paint loss due to normal wear and tear of an object of this age. See photos.
