Silver Plated Double Inkwell with cherubs and Letter Holder. Back in 1836, ready-made ink was made available and inkwells were created to hold ink. People would take their feather quill, or later, metal nib pens, dip it in the inkwell and write. Many inkwells were portable, but the decorative ones for desks gained popularity quickly. Designs were created in cut glass crystal, milk glass, enameled champleve, brass, bronze, faience pottery, sterling, silverplate, porcelain, and more. Before the advent of the fountain pen in the late 19th century, these were part of everyones lives and helped to record everything from national declarations and business deals to literature, love letters and other correspondence.
