Stangl Art Pottery 6" plate in Yellow Tulip pattern. #3637
Rare hand date under the glaze. If anyone knows the history behind hand-dating, please let me know.
This Yellow Tulip pattern was introduced in 1942 and is a design by artist Kay Hackett. The pattern was originally sold by Marshall Filed's in Chicago and then at Bloomingdales in New York in the early 1960s. It was marketed as "early Prnnsylvania Pottery Dinnerware". There were fewer made in the blue color compared to the yellow which was sold in many retail stores . It is one of many hand-painted patterns manufactured by Stangl in Trenton, New Jersey which closed in 1978. Quite expensive at the time of their making, the dinnerware has seen a dramatic drop in price with the advent of internet sales, a perfect time to start a collection of these beautiful ceramics.
