Vintage Rooster Vases, California Pottery, 1950's, Hedi shops Schoop, Colorful hand painted, 13 inches tall, MCM

A charming pair of quirky roosters from the pottery studio of Hedi Schoop. Hedi was a painter, sculptor, and dancer who settled in California after fleeing Nazi Germany. She had her studio in Hollywood, California and worked from about 1940 - 1958 creating colorful, distinctive ceramic works of art. Both are signed by the artist. A friend's mother purchased them directly from the artist's studio.

These roosters are an excellent example of her work - whimsical, bright and bold. The clay is roughly textured in areas to give depth to the 'feathers' and a rather rustic look. The entire bird is glazed, although the rooster's comb seems to have been painted after glazing. Several shades of green and gold on these two.

There is an opening in the tail feathers so that these can be used shops for floral arrangements. Although fairly clean inside, you can see evidence that they have been used for arrangements. Probably a better idea to just use dried materials or leaves in these.

Condition: Very nice vintage condition with only a few tiny nicks in the paint. No crazing of the glaze. The most notable thing to point out is the paint loss on the combs of the roosters. There is also a factory flaw in the bottom of one figure - a crack that is under the glaze. But it is sealed, so the figure can still hold water without leaking. It does not extend into the base and has not compromised the structure. Overall, these are in remarkably good shape considering they are over 70 years old!
