Antique Late Victorian Silver Plated Coin or Stamp Purse
This is a delightful little coin or stamp purse
on a chain for very tiny precious things.
We have seen a number of finger purses
and they are alway much larger than this little beauty.
The design and shape is very Art Nouveau,
the purse has a stiffened green fabric
divided pouch inside just large enough
for postage stamps or small change.
Overall in good condition,
the silver is worn in some places
and the surface does show fine scratch marks.
The clasp is still in good working condition as is the hinge.
The purse opens to show two compartments.
The purse measures 2” wide by 1 1/2” high,
the chain is 20” long
the weight is 27 grams
Estimated late Victorian, around the 1890's-1910 era.
History: A lovely example of a ladies finger / Chatelaine purse used to accessorise formal evening wear in Victorian times. When dancing with a gentleman, the ring would be worn on one finger. The purse would hold the ladies dance card rota.
Marks/Observations: The silver plate marks are to be found on the inside of the clasp.
Condition: Overall in good condition, the silver is worn in some places and the surface does show fine scratch marks. The clasp is still in good working condition as is the hinge. The purse opens to show three compartements, the lining appears to be made of shops blue taffeta and is in good condition with all stitching intact.Three small dents to the surface.
