FRENCH ART CARICATURES Honore Daumier Law And Justice or Les Gens De Justice 2 Of Series # shops 13 # 17

Artist Honore Victor Daumier ( 1808 - 1879 ) was born in Marseille, France. His paintings now hold place of honour in such famous museums as Louvre Museum, Paris France and Metropolitan Museum Of Art New York, USA. In the 1840s his caricatures of law officials endeared him to the public. As a young man one of his first jobs saw him working as an office boy in the law system. It was there he was able to get an inside look at what some law members of that time were all about. To top off his knowledge of the justice system he was imprisoned for his depiction of King Louis Phillipe. Daumier created a series of caricatures of the justice system called Les Gens De Justice or Law and Justice. This series proved to be his most popular work. In this frame the top picture is # 17 and bottom is # 13. All information on these is given in French. These were professionally framed in Kelowna, British Columbia Canada in 1990. Publishers were Chez Aubert De La Bourse, 23, Paris France, famous for original lithographs and etchings. Also on both pictures is the name Imp. Mourlot F Res … a leading print shop founded in Paris France in 1852. On bottom left corner picture # 13 is the # 802. Translation of top picture is " Come witness it is important that you detail shops the exact and full use of your last day April 12? But Mr. President that was 9 months ago … It does not matter always say. Bottom picture translates " My dear what do you want... We were unhappy … I could not prove your innocence this time... but on your next flight I hope to be happier... ". Measurements of top image is 7 inches x 9 in, including title and caricature description it is 9 1/8 in. x 10 7/8 in. Bottom image is 7 1/2 in x 9 3/4 in, with title and bottom description it is 11 in. x 9 3/8 in. Entire picture in lovely wood frame measures 24 3/4 inches x 15 1/2 in.
