- Gold Vermeil uses the process of e-coating, known formally as electro-coating. E-coating is a method using electrical current to coat the metal surface with lacquer, covering the jewelry with an even and consistent protective coat. In order to be considered Gold Vermeil certain requirements must be met. Here in the US the FTC requires a minimum base metal of sterling silver, at least 10 karats or better in quality and the thickness of gold must be at least 2.5 mm minimum.
