Fabulous teapot, hand painted in warm colors and gold gilt with moriage, from Japan, 1920s or 30s. The raised dragon wraps around the pot. It's tail body is the handle and the head is the tip of the spout. The picture depicted is of Kannon with two Raman's on each side of her. Kannon is a compassion deity, similar to Quan Yin in China, and extremely popular in Japan because of her efficacy in answering prayers and for miracles.
The dragon is symbolic in Japan, representing many things, among them, balance freedom and good luck. It is also known to have supernatural powers and wisdom.

The back stamp is The Takito Company (1880-1948). Known for its lustreware and moriage in the Satsuma style. This mark is often found on the lustreware and so likely dates from the 20s or 30s , when this decoration style was fashionable.

Size is 7.75" tall. Holds about 4 cups
Condition is very good, esp considering the age. Very little wear on the gold, no chips or cracks.
